Military & Family Life Counselor

Maria Primm is the Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) for Desertaire Elementary, Parkland Middle, and Parkland High School. Maria has over 10 years of counseling experience in a variety of organizations: non-profits, community mental health, and Job Corps. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and received a Master of Arts in Counseling from The University of Texas at San Antonio. The MFLC is recognized as one of the strongest supports for addressing the social and emotional needs of military parents, families, and communities.  The MFLC's major duties and responsibilities:

- Integrate the Military child into the campus.

- Communicates with principal, teachers, students and parents. 

- Exercises emotional stability, patience, tact and good judgement in all situations. 

- Interact with students on campus. 

- Serves as a District advocate to the military community.

- Keeps the military leadership aware of district, family, and school issues.

- Advocates and provides program information and support to military families.

- Interacts with military parents.

- Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the YISD safety program. 

- Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies. 

- Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.

- Performs other duties as determined through discussion with the supervisor. 

- Provide optimal customer service to all students, employees, parents, community, members and any other stakeholders of the district.

Campus Military Liaison

Viridiana Alvarez, counselor at Desertaire Elementary, will also be serving as our school's Military Liaison. She received her Bachelors in Education in 2008 and her Masters in Education in 2014. She will be working with military students and families during the We Serve Too club meetings and small group guidance lessons.
